ABSTRACT
Waste is an environmental problem that is still a challenge, especially due to the increase in generation, population growth, and changes in people's lifestyles. The high composition of residual waste due to sorting at the source is not carried out optimally, so massive residual waste processing is needed. Residual waste treatment through the incineration method at the Mengwitani Recycling Center (PDU) produces waste in the form of bottom ash which has increased generation so that it is necessary to know the characteristics to determine its potential utilization. This study aims to determine the amount of basic ash generated by, identify physical and chemical characteristics, and identify its potential use as a construction material. The ash test samples were taken from six active incinerator furnaces, physically tested by filter analysis, moisture content, and specific gravity, as well as chemical testing using the Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry (AAS) method and then compared to the standard. Ash generation reaches an average of 1,090 tons/year and is likely to increase from 2021 to 2024. Ash is dominated by fine fractions (<4.75 mm), low moisture content (1.181%), and light specific gravity (1.272 g/cm³). The metal content is dominated by Ca at 45,625 ppm. Based on the results of physical and chemical characteristics tests, the ash from incineration at the Mengwitani PDU has the potential to be used as an alternative material in the construction sector, namely as a mixed or additional material (filler) in mortar or concrete and as a partial sand for paving blocks.
